Advocates for biomass utilization and renewable energy development from across the state and region will gather in Choctaw, Mississippi on April 14-15, 2008, to learn, plan and network. "Building on the Strengths of Mississippi’s Biomass Resources" is a conference that will bring together a wide variety of leaders, researchers, and business developers who will explore next steps for building a vibrant bio-economy in Mississippi.

The 7th Annual Southern BioProducts and Renewable Energy Conference, hosted by the Mississippi Biomass Conference, will also mark the tenth anniversary of an organization that started with a small group of leaders that has now grown to a council of more than 50 members from the agriculture, forestry, environmental, academia, business, and government sectors. This year's conference will kick-off off the next ten years in co-operative efforts among Mississippi leaders to bring a bio-based economy to life. The conference will also will challenge participants to work tirelessly in 2008 to develop a long-range plan to grow a vibrant industry sector in Mississippi focused on the utilization of our home-grown biomass resources.

Dr. Gale Buchanan, USDA Under Secretary for Research, Education, and Economics, has accepted our invitation to join us at the conference and will deliver the Monday keynote address underscoring the role that research, education and extension will have in the development of a new bio-based economy in Mississippi and the nation. Dr. Buchanan served in leadership roles with the Alabama and Georgia Agricultural Experiment Stations before joining USDA in 2006.

Other activities include a student research poster competition, with cash prizes. In addition, the Mississippi Biomass Council will award its third Undergraduate Biomass Studies Scholarship, in the amount of $1,000 towards a student’s tuition. Obtain a scholarship application form from the Mississippi Biomass Council website (www.ms-biomass.org). Applications are due before March 30.

Join us April 14-15 at the Pearl River Resort’s Silver Star Hotel and Conference Center in Choctaw, Mississippi, to examine ways in which the strengths and resources of Mississippi and the Southern United States can contribute to the development and implementation of various bioproduct and renewable energy technologies. Sponsorship and exhibit opportunities are also available.
