6th Annual Southern BioProducts and Renewable Energy Conference

The MSU Industrial Outreach Service (IOS), Mississippi Technology Alliance (MTA), and the Mississippi Biomass and Renewable Energy Council (MBREC) were organizers of the sixth annual Southern BioProducts & Renewable Energy Conference, held at the Pearl River Resort in Choctaw on April 16-18 th 2007. With over 200 people from over twenty states attending, this was the most successful conference to date. Presentations and workshops highlighted recent successes in the renewable energy sector and addressed ways in which the strengths and resources of the Southeast United States can contribute to the development and implementation of renewable energy technologies.
Among the 39 featured presenters were internationally recognized speakers including Scott Sklar, President of The Stella Group, and Dr. David Bransby, professor at Auburn University who has advised President George W. Bush on renewable energy issues.The conference attracted 27 sponsors, of which 17 provided exhibits, and 16 student poster presentations. Three area high schools (Houston High School, Newton County High School and Choctaw High School) exhibited competition solar cars along side Alabama logger Wayne Keith’s wood burning log truck and MTA’s 85% ethanol capable Chevrolet Avalanche. A $1000 undergraduate scholarship from the Mississippi Biomass and Renewable Energy Council was awarded to Brittany Penland of MSU’s Agricultural and Biological Engineering department along with $650 in cash prizes to four undergraduate students in the research poster competition.
